Key points

The fourth trimester is a lot. Here’s how to think about coming back to your GLP-1.

Timing

There’s no single right time. Your prescriber will think about:

Restarting the dose

If you were on…Usually
Any GLP-1 before pregnancyExpect to restart at the starting dose and step up again. The labels don’t cover a break of months, but Wegovy’s comes closest: miss 2 or more doses in a row and it says to restart the escalation at a lower dose. Your prescriber decides

Side effects can come back strongly if you restart at a high dose.

Contraception after birth

Pregnancy is possible soon after birth, sometimes before your first period returns. If you use the pill with tirzepatide, the backup windows apply from your first dose. Many women choose an IUD or implant after birth.

Your mood matters

Postpartum depression is common and treatable. GLP-1 labels also advise watching for mood changes. If you’re struggling, tell your doctor. If you’re having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988.

A real-life example

Lauren, 34, had gestational diabetes and was eager to restart Mounjaro at her 6-week check. She wasn’t breastfeeding. Her doctor restarted her at 2.5 mg, placed an IUD at the same visit, and checked her blood sugar and mood.

Questions to ask at your postpartum visit

Common questions

Can I restart Zepbound at my old dose?

Usually not after a long break. Your prescriber will likely restart you low.

Does a C-section change when I can restart?

It may. Your prescriber will consider your recovery.

Will restarting help with postpartum weight?

It may, but give your body time. Your prescriber can help you set realistic goals.
