Hair shedding a few months after starting Ozempic, Wegovy or Zepbound is usually temporary. Here is why it happens, how long it lasts, and when to ask your doctor.
Finding more hair in your brush a few months into a GLP-1 is upsetting. You’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone. Here’s what’s usually going on.
Hair grows in cycles. When your body goes through a big change (fast weight loss, a big drop in how much you eat, illness or stress), more hairs can move into the resting and shedding phase at once. Dermatologists call this telogen effluvium.
The delay is what makes it confusing: the shedding typically starts 2–3 months after the change that triggered it. By then you may not connect the two.
Hair loss is also listed among the reported side effects on both the Wegovy and Zepbound labels. On Wegovy’s 2.4 mg injection it was reported by 3% of adults, against 1% on placebo — so it is real, but it is not what happens to most people.
For most people it’s temporary. Shedding usually settles within several months, and the hair grows back, though regrowth takes time to be noticeable. It rarely means permanent thinning.
Never stop or change your medication because of hair shedding without talking to your prescriber first.
| Shedding (telogen effluvium) | Thinning or patchy loss | |
|---|---|---|
| What you notice | More hairs in the brush, shower and pillow | A wider part, see-through areas, or bald patches |
| When it starts | Often 2–3 months after a trigger | Gradually, or suddenly in one spot |
| Usually | Temporary | Worth a doctor’s or dermatologist’s opinion |
Longer hair makes shedding more visible, and many women are also in perimenopause, when hormone changes can affect hair too. Iron can also run low in women with heavy periods. That’s one reason doctors often check iron (ferritin) when shedding continues.
With less appetite, the goal is making small meals count. Many women find it easier to:
Your prescriber or a dietitian can suggest a protein target that fits you.
There’s a lot of marketing aimed at people on GLP-1s. Supplements like biotin are only proven to help if you’re actually low. Taking biotin can also interfere with some blood tests, including thyroid tests, so tell your doctor if you take it. Ask your doctor before starting anything new.
Take a photo of your hairline or part every 2 weeks in the same light. It’s the easiest way to see whether shedding is slowing, which is hard to judge day to day.
Most shedding linked to GLP-1s is thought to come from fast weight loss and eating less, not the medicine itself. Both the Wegovy and Zepbound labels do list hair loss as a reported side effect, at a few percent.
Not necessarily, and stopping has its own effects. Talk to your prescriber before making any change.
Hair grows about 1 cm a month, so noticeable regrowth can take several months after shedding slows.
Yes, if you have patches, a widening part, scalp symptoms, or shedding beyond 6 months.
