Key points

How much?

Needs vary with body size, heat and activity. The National Academies put adequate intake for women at about 2.7 liters (91 oz) of total water a day, from food and drinks combined — and that figure is for healthy, fairly sedentary people in a temperate climate, so hot weather or hard exercise pushes it up. Roughly 80% of it comes from what you drink, including caffeinated drinks, and about 20% from food. Your doctor may advise differently, for example if you have heart or kidney conditions.
